What are salad bowls used for?

Salaterki were invented in France. Their Polish name comes from the French term "saladier", meaning salad. They were originally made of wood or metal, and from the 18th century onwards also of porcelain. Glass salad bowls gained popularity in the 19th century and, after the spread of plastics in the 20th century, also made of plastic. As the name suggests, they are used to serve salads, making this inconspicuous dish look striking on any table.

How do I choose a good salad bowl?

When purchasing this piece of tableware, there are a few important things to consider:

  • The size of the salad bowl should be matched to the number of people you will be serving the salad to - you can place one larger dish on the table or divide the salad portions into smaller salad bowls and place them in several places on a long table.

  • Pay attention to thematerial used in the manufacturing process. High-quality porcelain salad bowls always look impressive, but they are the most expensiveof all availableproducts. Glass dishes, which are transparent and expose the dish inside, are excellent. We can opt for plastic, lightweightsalad bowls, but also metal dishes, which can be difficult to carry once the salad is inside.

  • Consider the design of the dishes, which should blend well with the rest of the tableware.

  • Good salad bowls should be easy to clean. Therefore, pay attention to whether they are dishwasher-safe on the label. This will save both time and money.

  • It is worth betting on products of recognised brands, such as Lubiana salad bowls, which are characterised by exceptional design and high durability.

What to serve in a salad bowl?

Salad bowls are considered to be one of the most versatile pieces of tableware. They are perfect for serving not only salads, but also other dishes:

  • They work great as a soup salad bowl - of course, such dishes should be suitably smaller, for example with a capacity of 330 to 400millilitres,to accommodate one portion of the dish .

  • Footed salad bowls are perfect for displaying sumptuous snacks such as jellies with fruit or desserts for scooping, such as panna cotta.

  • They are also suitable for serving main pasta-based dishes - spaghetti mixed with bolognese sauce, penne with chanterelles, or tagiatelle pasta with prawns. However, such a dish should be suitably larger and taller in order to accommodate a dish for several people and at the same time not splash the table when scooping portions onto the plate.

  • Both large and small salad bowls are ideal for serving sweet and salty snacks. If you are expecting a larger number of guests, the small bowls can be used to serve crackers, chocolate balls or bagels. Large salvers will work well during a screening with friends when preparing a larger quantity of popcorn.
