Which espresso cups to choose?
Many of us have come across espresso coffee. This beverage, which originated in Italy, can be freely translated as 'pressed' or 'pressed' coffee. This is a direct reference to the method of preparation, as finely ground coffee beans are used, which are then whisked in a dispenser from the espresso machine and, under high pressure, temperature and a small amount of water, the drink is literally 'pressed', acquiring a very strong flavour and aroma. This produces a small amount of drink, usually around 30 millilitres. Therefore, the espresso cup is adapted in its capacity and design to the amount of coffee obtained.
What should be the capacity of a serving vessel for very strong coffee?
Although only 30 millilitres of the beverage is produced during the preparation of espresso, literally for one sip, it is not served in vessels of similar capacity. According to custom, espresso cups are roughly 70 millilitres in size, which is more than half the amount of beverage inside. However, this preserves certain organoleptic characteristics of the coffee. The beverage tastes much better and, just as importantly, is able to accommodate the fine froth that emerges. The slightly larger vessel is also easier to hold - all of which are qualities that make espresso so popular with coffee connoisseurs. It is also worth noting that espresso cups have thick walls and bottoms, so that the beverage retains its temperature and does not cool down too quickly.
Classic or modern design? Which product to choose?
It is generally accepted that an espresso cup should be made of ceramic. This ensures that, although they are small in size, they gain a certain massiveness, plus they are definitely more durable in mechanical terms than articles made of porcelain. They generally come in egg or tulip variants. The first type has gently rounded walls, which are reminiscent of a cut egg at about 3/4 height, while the tulip variants, reminiscent of a tulip flower, are also very popular. These products generally have a uniform colour scheme, without rich design. For espresso cups, it is simplicity that counts, so that the focus is more on the aromatic coffee experience. More and more consumers are also opting for transparent cups - we recommend the double-walled models, which keep the beverage warm while emphasising the depth of the prepared coffee.
