Is it healthy to cook in stainless steel pots?
Stainless steel is a non-toxic material that does not react with food. As a result, cooking in them is safe and does not release any harmful substances into the food. It also has the effect of preserving the nutritional value of the products, making the dishes delicious and very healthy.
Which stainless steel cookware should I choose?
Good stainless steel cookware is a real must have in many households because of its very good value for money. To ensure that the cookware is fully functional for us, it is worth paying attention to the following when buying:
- The type of steel used in their manufacture. The best products are those made of 18/10 or 18/8 steel, which are resistant to rust and retaintheir shine for a very long time .
- Let's bet on products made in a robust way. Stainless steel pots with thick bottoms heat up more slowly, but heat the food evenly, which makes for efficient cooking.
- Pay attention to what type of cooker the cookware is designed for. Stainless steel cookware for induction has a special magnetic bottom, which the respective cooker 'reads', making it possible to heat the bottom. Nowadays, universal products are also offered, which are also suitable for gas or ceramic cookers.
- The cookware we choose should have strong, contoured handles, preferably ones that do not heat up, which will make it much easier to remove them from the cooker.
- An essential part of any steel pot is the lids, which are an essential element when stewing. They must be well-fitted in terms of diameter, but also made of heat-resistant glass.
- Let's rely on products that will allow us to prepare dishes. Favour ready-to-use sets with 2 to 6-7 litre capacity for braised meats, pasta or broth.
Can food be stored in stainless steel pots?
Pots made of stainless steel are distinguished by a number of features that contribute to their durability, but also their functionality. They do not corrode when in contact with food, nor do they develop a patina (as is the case with articles made of copper, for example), so the flavour of the stored food does not change. This is an extremely important tip for those cooking soups or one-pot dishes - once the food has cooled down, the pot can be stored in the fridge without fear of losing its aroma and flavour.
How do I clean the outside of my stainless steel pots?
It is not uncommon for the outside of the cooker to become burnt on due to use on a gas cooker or because of splatter from, for example, a frying pan or another pot. How can such a pot then be cleaned? There are several effective ways to get rid of stubborn dirt:
- The most common one is to use dishwashing liquid and water. Soak and scrub such a steel pot with a sponge and the liquid, then rinse it under running water.
- If the dirt is much larger, we can mix half a cup of vinegar and half a cup of water (increase the proportions for larger pots) and immerse the pot in the solution for about 30 minutes. Gently wipe with a sponge and wash the dish under running water.
- Alternatively, mix a teaspoon of baking soda with three tablespoons of water and scrub the cookware with this solution, then rinse it in clean water.
Can stainless steel pots be washed in the dishwasher?
Stainless steel cooking utensils can be cleaned in the dishwasher, provided, of course, that larger pieces of food are removed from the inside which could clog the filters in the machine. It is also advisable to choose suitable detergents, such as tablets, which will clean the dishes effectively without damaging their delicate surface. And don't forget to dry them thoroughly after removing them from the dishwasher, so that they will serve you in an unchanged condition for many years.
