Doormats for outside and inside doors, stair mats for stairwells and mats for public buildings are an essential item that should not be forgotten for practical, aesthetic and cleanliness reasons. Doormats are the first and most effective barrier against dirt, water, snow, mud and so on being carried into your home. They also enhance the look of your entrance, can be a signature feature of your home and invite guests in with a warm welcome.
Doormats for the home - which are the most effective? Types of door mats
There is an endless choice of doormats on the market, so before making a decision it is worth considering the categories available. Depending on where they will be used, we distinguish: domestic doormats, public building mats, outdoor doormats and indoor doormats.
Mats for buildings with many users are usually large rubber, open-weave mats placed in specially designated recesses. They can also be metal mats with or without a scraper. Their main function is to collect the most dirt, water, snow and mud.
Domestic doormats are the more decorative and ornamental ones. The most common are standard small coir doormats measuring 40x60 cm, or slightly larger 90x60 cm or 120x80 cm. Coir doormats are very attractive and popular because their rough, tightly packed fibres clean shoes perfectly and absorb moisture well. Coir fibres can also be dyed in any colour. These mats can be printed with various patterns, slogans and greetings, and can even be personalised. They are certainly never dull.
Another type of domestic doormat is rubber, somewhat resembling the public ones. They are most often open-weave, and ease of cleaning is key here. Simply sweep away the dirt from under the mat, then shake it out and rinse it so it is clean again.
The last category is plastic doormats. They often feature fine, dense bristles that clean footwear very well. The downside is that they wear out relatively quickly.
Outdoor doormats, hallway mats, bathroom rugs - essentials for the home
Beyond doormats specifically for the door, it is also worth looking at decorative mats and rugs for the hallway. The choice is really extensive, and attractive designs can decorate an indoor stairwell, corridor or hallway. These are usually flat-woven mats that are easy to keep clean, often finished with tassels, and they suit the popular boho style of interior design very well.
You might also consider cosy faux fur rugs. They will add warmth to the atmosphere of any room.
For outdoor steps, safety is important, so non-slip doormats are ideal, either with a non-slip base or made entirely of rubber.
When it comes to domestic floor textiles, do not forget timeless bathroom rugs. They are reliable and always in fashion. It is worth choosing versatile sets in plain colours that suit the character and style of your bathroom.
